Foodfrom 14.04 to 14.04.2011Gradees, St Helier RESTAURANT REVIEW. Atmosphere and quirkiness; look at specially designed eating spaces - and look at a successful small restaurant. Both of them attempt to provide those attributes - and then ask where you would prefer to go on an evening out with friends.
This brings us neatly to Colomberie Court and, within it, Gradees’ restaurant, presided over by Miguel. It is the ideal local restaurant used by local people.
It offers a well-chosen range of proven tasty dishes, excellent value set meals and a good range of Spanish wines (as befitting the origin of the owner).
Gradees is a regular port of call as a place to have a good evening out with friends. The set menu - if you want to limit your expense - is very good value and it includes the restaurant’s signature dishes such as prawns on a black bean sauce as a starter, breast of chicken stuffed with chorizo as a main course and a local catch of the day - wing of skate was on offer the last time I was there.
Desserts include profiteroles, or blackberry and apple pie.
The cost with wine, is in the region of £50 per couple and we left well fed, with food cooked for us by the chef (not with bread to disguise the paucity of the serving). The ambiente made the evening, nothing planned, nothing designed - just a feeling of well-being shared by ourselves and around 50 others, all of whom, it seemed, were talking, enjoying themselves and eating well at the same time. That’s what makes a good restaurant.
As we left, Miguel was sitting down with a friend to enjoy his own dinner; after all it was 11 o clock at night and just the right time to have dinner in Spain.
