Foodfrom 07.02 to 07.02.2011The Farm House, L’Auberge du Nord RESTAURANT REVIEW. This is the latest incarnation of the old L’Auberge du Nord: a farmhouse-type pub in the northern rural parish of St John.
The old Auberge has had a new lease of life. Until recently it was not having a happy time – like most country pubs it could not cope with present-day anti-drink-and-drive legislation. Various attempts to put some pzazz in the place by making it into a nightclub failed lamentably, and so last year the Boat House Group took on the tenancy.
The Boathouse group, based on the Boathouse Restaurant in St Aubin ( www.jerseyboathouse.com ) has given a new lease of life to several Jersey pubs and restaurants, and all their outlets offer good quality meals of a type that is far better than ‘pub grub’.
The Farm House was the old dining area of the Auberge, but is has been thoroughly transformed into a pleasant restaurant. There is no interior access between the pub and the restaurant now, so no bar noises obtrude from off-stage.
A good place for a Sunday lunch. We had our five-year-old child with us, and there was a good children’s menu (no dinosaur nuggets), from which the young critic chose a small-sized portion of roast pork, and ate it all up.
One grown-up had fish-and chips with un-greasy tempura batter, and the other had rack of lamb.
Lots of space between the tables. The only downside – as reported to us by others as well – is the slowness of service. The food is worth waiting for, but it was one long time coming, so come early, and bring a game with you to amuse the youngsters.
Bottle of South African Sauvignon Blanc, two desserts, one coffee - £55.
