Foodfrom 01.03 to 31.12.2010Royal Hotel, St Martin, Jersey RESTAURANT REVIEW. A country pub – at one time every Jersey parish had one opposite or near the church.
Lounge bar and adjacent dining area. It is quite a dark place, but a nice open fire in winter makes it comfortable, despite the open-plan lounge bar, typical pub furnishings, and condiments in fiddly little sachets that make it exactly the same as a million olde worlde pubs around Britain.
The menu is also fairly pub-typical – Steak ‘n ale pie has been on the specials menu for literally decades, and the selection of salads hasn’t changed in years, either. At one time, the food quality sank to quite a low level, but perhaps a new chef, or a pep talk, or whatever, has improved the quality considerably.
At a recent lunch there the baby spare ribs (an extremely big plateful) was excellent. Two plates of that, and two glasses wine from the bar cost £23 in total.
In January’s snow a friend and his wife ate there one evening and enjoyed well-prepared rib-eye steaks and chips and two glasses wine for £28.
There are hosts of places where you could pay more and eat less well. No wine list – this is a pub, after all. But what’s on sale behind the bar is adequate.
Hope they keep up this recent improvement.
