Jersey Opera offers opera live from New York’s Met
Jersey Opera house is offering live performances of opera productions from the Metropolitan Opera in New York this season thanks to a new high definition system installed for the purpose.
The first opera performance was Wagner’s, Das Rheingold, followed by Boris Godunov, which had to be cancelled because of poor satellite reception from New York. Next on the calendar are Donizetti’s Don Pasquale on 4 December, a new production of Verdi’s Don Carlo on 12 December and Puccini’s Fanciulla del West on 15 January.
In 2006 The Met launched its programme The Metropolitan Opera: Live in High Definition, a series of live performances streamed in high definition from New York to theatres around the world. About five million opera fans have already followed the performances since 2006.
The Jersey opera house has signed a similar agreement with England’s National Theatre to show some of its productions live. On 9 December there will a performance of the National Theatre’s Hamlet played by Rory Kinnear, directed by Nicholas Hynter.
