Jersey’s population has reached almost 100,000, according to the 2011 census figures released on 8 December. There are now 97,857 residents living in the island compared with 87,186 in 2001. Immigrants make up 6,800 of the 10,671 increase.
The rise in population will put pressure on the island’s government to bring in stricter controls on the numbers who come to live on the island. At present the figure is set at 150 heads of household a year.
The census results were released on the same day as the unemployment figures, which show that at present there are 2,569 people out of work compared with 1,020 a decade ago.
Figures on place of birth, ethnicity and length of residency will be released on 15 December.
