Jersey has reduced the cost of postage for the Christmas period and has launched a new set of six stamps for use in December. The usual 37p stamp for local mail has been reduced to 35p and the 50p for the UK to 45p.
Jersey Post says that it wants to encourage people to keep in touch over Christmas and that the discounts will help the usual seasonal mailing of cards and greetings.
The new stamps – in 37p, 42p, 49p, 50p, 79p and 86p denominations – are based on the theme of Christmas tree decorations and are on sale until 10 December.
Jersey Post has been through a period of restructuring in recent years as the traditional postal system has been forced to change thanks to the widespread use of internet. This has led to a decline in personal mailing of letters and cards but an increase in the parcel post as more and more people shop online.
Jersey stamps are collectors’ item and their design, often by Jersey artists, has been of an unusually high standard for decades. The new discounted Christmas series comes only weeks after the release of the Harmonious Stamp issue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
The six stamps in the series depict musical instruments set against the background of sheet music by Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Respighi, Elgar and Rossini, all composers in the orchestra’s repertoire.
